Proposals for
Reimagined Futures

Publisher: Vancouver Biennale
Distributor: To be announced

Since 2021, Jonathan Luckhurst has been working towards the evolution and unification of his cross-disciplinary work in installation art, food sovereignty and land stewardship. The outcomes of this work are presented in Proposals for Reimagined Futures as concepts for large-scale public artworks and as the first step towards their realization.

While each proposal is unique, they are all grounded by an opportunity to collaborate with Nature  — improving soil, sequestering carbon, utilizing materials that connect to the circular economy, providing food not only for humans but creating habitat for pollinators and animals. As artworks, they provide a foundation for placemaking, community gathering and the enrichment of public space while at the same time playing with the viewer's sense of the unexpected. Luckhurst's installations force the viewer to take aim at their perception of the built environment and natural systems and by doing so, attempt to create the beginning of an awareness.

As Luckhurst says, "We are at a critical point in human history in which we require a cross-pollination of ideas and knowledge systems — art steeped in science and in the natural systems that drive and sustain life on Earth. To achieve this, art cannot just philosophize about a set of ideas, or speak to viewers in metaphor. It must be anchored by a pragmatic demonstration of the very ideas communicated by the art — contributions to the real-world that conserve resources, sequester carbon and increase food sovereignty while also promoting biodiversities.
